ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkey’s foreign minister said on Thursday Sweden and Finland had still fulfilled all obligations under an agreement allowing them to run for the NATO club and had yet to take concrete steps.
Mevlut Cavusoglu, speaking to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Istanbul, also said Turkey had observed that the new Swedish government, led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, was taking decisive steps to meet its obligations.
Sweden and Finland signed a memorandum in June, which prompted NATO member Turkey to veto their programs to join the transatlantic security alliance. Both asked to join in reaction to Russia’s war in Ukraine, but Turkey asked for more guarantees, adding that they do not harbor Kurdish militants.
