“254 terrorists neutralized in operation”
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Wednesday that the Turkish military had hit some 500 Kurdish targets in Iraq and Syria as part of a crusade of airstrikes.
“So far, 471 targets have been hit and 254 terrorists have been neutralized in the operation,” Anadolu news agency quoted Akar as saying.
Ankara on Sunday introduced a series of airstrikes as part of Operation Sword-Claw. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened on Tuesday to launch a floor operation in Syria “with tanks and soldiers” in defiance of foreign pressure to do so.
Turkey’s airstrikes followed a bomb attack in Istanbul on November 3 that killed six more people and wounded 81. Ankara blamed the attack on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is blacklisted as a terrorist organization of the European Union and the United States. The PKK has denied any role in the attack, the deadliest in five years after a series of attacks in Turkey between 2015 and 2017.
Earlier on Tuesday, Russia said it expected Turkey to show “restraint” and chorus of “any exaggerated use of force” in Syria. players like the United States and Russia have kept Erdogan’s ambitions at bay,” but the scenario may change.
“It would be unexpected for Erdogan to choose this specific moment to carry out his ambitious plan when the attention of world powers is focused more on Ukraine and Qatar than on northern Syria and Iraq,” he said.
