As a component of the agreement, Iran has committed to conducting its nuclear activities to alleviate sanctions and other benefits.
Since the withdrawal of the United States, Iran has taken modest development measures to move away from compliance with the nuclear agreement by pushing for sanctions relief.
The European allies of the United States – which, along with Russia and China, signed the iran agreement – have expressed the support of the extension of the traditional arms embargo, but their priority is to maintain the JCPOA.
The US text that would enlarge the embargo calls for an indefinite extension.
Diplomats are concerned that the solution simply threatens the nuclear agreement. Iran says it has the right to protect itself and that maintaining the ban would mean the end of the nuclear deal.
“The concentrate will have to remain in the preservation of the JCPOA,” one diplomat told the AFP.
This is the way to give assurances about the exclusively non-violent nature of Iran’s nuclear program. A credible option for this tool has never been proposed since the withdrawal of the United States,” they added.
Experts say the gulf between the U.S. and its allies threatens discontent with the Security Council as the October 18 deadline approaches.
