Trump Achieves NCR Day 1 Win After Officially Nominee with Vance

Former President Donald Trump made that impression Monday night alongside his new running mate, Sen. J. D. Vance, at the Republican National Convention. This is the first time Trump has appeared in public since Saturday’s shocking assassination attempt.

The crowd cheered Trump, whose ear was bandaged after being shot Saturday at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump posted on social media over the weekend that he had thought about postponing his trip to Milwaukee, but wrote that he “just made a decision that I cannot allow a possible ‘shooter’ or assassin to force a schedule change or any another thing.

Trump’s appearance capped a dramatic few days for the former president, just days after the assassination attempt at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which killed one bystander and seriously injured two others. Secret Service snipers shot and killed the shooter, who has since been known as a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania. The FBI and the Secret Service still have a motive.

The former president announced on social media Monday that he had selected Vance, a 39-year-old senator from Ohio, as his running mate. Vance, according to a source, learned it had been decided about 20 minutes before Trump made his selection public in a social media post.

Trump and Vance were officially nominated through the RNC on Monday. Vance spoke after announcing his nomination to greet delegates with his spouse, Usha.

Earlier in the day, Trump also got more smart news: A federal ruling in Florida dismissed charges opposing him and his two co-defendants, ruling that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith was illegally funded.

This is how the first day of NCR 2024 went:

About 2,400 delegates from across the country will officially nominate Trump in a roll call vote.

The states announce the number of delegates they will give to each candidate. States Parties’ regulations on how delegates can vote during the convention. Typically, a candidate’s state delegation will force them to cross the threshold to officially download the nomination. In Trump’s case, it would be Florida.

The vote is considered a formality because Trump secured the nomination in March, gathering the 1,125 delegates needed for the presumptive nominee. Trump won 2,243 delegates at the end of the first process, according to CBS News estimates.

Trump is expected to officially settle for the nomination for the third time since 2016 in a speech Thursday night.

Adding to this pomp, the GOP will adopt a new platform that will melt away its rhetoric on abortion and claim that the factor deserves a decision in every state. The platform also proposes building a missile shield over the United States and promises tax cuts and mass deportations of others who are in the United States illegally.

The RNC and Trump’s campaign on Saturday announced a list of speakers for this week’s convention, which includes lawmakers, television personalities and entertainers, family members of the former president and others. The detailed programme of speakers has not yet been published.

Among members of Trump’s family circle, his two oldest children are expected to speak, as well as his son Donald Jr. ‘s fiancee, Kimberly Guilfoyle, and Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump. Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, was not named speaker, nor was his daughter Ivanka Trump, who worked in his first administration.

While the speaker list is typically governed by governors, lawmakers and officials, others, such as country music stars Lee Greenwood and Chris Janson, as well as rapper Amber Rose, are also on the speaker list, as is Tucker Carlson.

Leading contenders for Trump’s vice presidential nomination, such as Burgum, Vance, Scott and Rubio, are also expected to speak during the week.

Trump’s former rival for the Republican nomination, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is also expected to speak. And in a surprising reversal, Nikki Haley, one of Trump’s main rivals, also accepted an invitation to speak at the convention, two sources familiar with the schedule. she told CBS News.

A senior GOP source with knowledge of the proceedings told CBS News that “the selection is made” for Trump’s running mate. The vice president selection will be announced at the conference shortly after 4:30 p. m. AND.

Michael Whatley, chairman of the Republican National Committee, began Monday afternoon by clarifying several administrative issues, including the election of a transition conference chair and the unanimous adoption of motions setting the rules of the debates.

Delegates gathered on the grounds of the Fiserv Forum and chanted “fight!”repeatedly, echoing Trump’s comment to the crowd in Pennsylvania just after firing.

Doug Burgum, the governor of North Dakota, reported that he would not be chosen as Trump’s running mate, according to a user briefed on the exchange.

The GOP followed through on its 16-page Trump-influenced agenda, a policy document it pledges to implement. The new platform softens the language on abortion and says the factor deserves a decision in every state. The platform also promises tax cuts and mass deportations of others who are in the United States illegally, as well as a proposal to build a missile shield over the United States.

“Our schedule mirrors Donald Trump’s schedule,” said Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn. The platform was approved by voice vote, with only a handful in opposition.

Trump’s crusade had been completed on the party’s platform this year, unlike in previous years.

Jeff Kaufmann, chairman of the Iowa Republican Party, took the floor to officially nominate Trump for president.

In a stirring speech, Kaufmann called the Republican Party “the party of the people” and said Trump had earned his acceptance as faithful and kept his word.

“It is an honor for me to nominate Donald J. Trump as president of the United States,” he said to applause and slogans “USA. “

Kaufmann called on conference attendees to join him in supporting Trump and the GOP agenda.

“This is an effort that will make United States rich again. It’s an effort to make United States rich again. This is the end of making United States strong again. And say it with me, dear Republicans, this is an effort to make United States wonderful again. “He said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who presides over the convention, took the floor and said, “Amen. “

Recently, the conference will hold a roll-call vote to officially nominate Trump, with a state party official designated to declare how the delegation votes. Iowa, Nevada and Oklahoma received the initiative, and all their delegates turned to Trump.

Trump announced in a social media post that he had selected first-term Ohio senator JD Vance as his vice presidential partner.

“After much deliberation and consideration, and contemplating the immense talents of many others, I have come to the conclusion that the most suitable candidate for the office of Vice President of the United States is Senator J. D. Vance of the wonderful state of Ohio,” the former president wrote.

Trump praised Vance’s career, adding as part of the e-book “Hillbilly Elegy,” that he said he “stood up for the working men and women of our country. “

The former president continued: “J. D. He has had a very successful business career in generation and finance, and now the campaign will focus heavily on the other people he fought so successfully for: American workers and farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Array Ohio, Minnesota and beyond.

Trump’s home state of Florida pushed him past the 1,215-delegate threshold needed to officially secure the nomination. His son, Eric Trump, appeared on the spot to announce the distribution of the 125 delegates.

“We hereby nominate one of them as the greatest president of all time, and that is Donald J. Trump, we hereby designate you as the Republican nominee for the presidency of the United States of America,” he said.

His previous state, New York, preceded Florida in pronouncing the delegate allocation.

“Donald J. Trump will be in New York, and New York will love President Donald J. Trump,” said Rep. Elise Stefanik, chair of the House Republican Conference, announcing her 91 delegates for Trump.

The GOP officially nominated Trump as its 2024 presidential nominee after the roll call vote. This is the third time since 2016 that Trump has been nominated. He will officially settle for the nomination in a speech Thursday night.

“The next candidate got the following votes: 2,387 votes for President Donald J. Trump. Let’s make this official,” said Louisiana House Speaker Mike Johnson, announcing that Trump “has been selected as the nominee of the Republican Party for the presidency of the United States. ”

Vance gave that impression at the conference venue about two hours after Trump announced the Ohio senator as his running mate.

A smiling Vance stepped out with his spouse, Usha, shook hands and took pictures with the attendees.

His appearance comes before he is officially nominated as a vice-presidential candidate. Vance’s nomination will not be put to a roll call vote and will be approved by acclamation.

The GOP officially nominated Vance as Trump’s vice presidential nominee by an acclamation vote to close the convention’s first consultation. Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted called Vance “the living embodiment of the American dream,” citing, among other things, his military service, business experience and his time in the Senate.

“He will faithfully support Prent Donald Trump as he wins this election and sets the course of our nation,” Husted said.

With a move through Bernie Moreno, the Ohio Republican Senate candidate, he approved the official nomination by voice vote.

“I officially claim President Donald J. Trump and JD Vance as Republican candidates for the presidency and vice presidency of the United States,” announced House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Vance, 39, is the young senator from Ohio and was first elected in 2022. He became known among conservatives after the publication of his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which chronicles the struggles of Appalachia and the Rust Belt America.

Trump said in making his selection that in the upcoming campaign, Vance “will focus strongly on the other people he fought so brilliantly for, the American staff and farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota and far beyond. “

Speaking before leaving for Las Vegas, President Biden said he saw no difference between Trump and Vance, his new running mate.

“He’s a clone of Trump on those issues,” the president said in his first comments about Vance.

An official with the Biden-Harris crusade said Vice President Kamala Harris reached out to Vance and left him a message to “congratulate him on his selection, welcome him to the race, and expressly hope that the two can meet at the vice presidential debate. ” proposed via CBS News. “

23 July and 13 August have been proposed as imaginable dates for the debate.

What happens at the Republican National Convention, held this week at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, will help determine whether Donald Trump, whose vision for America differs markedly from that of President Joe Biden, will return to the White House. But it was a much smaller gathering. , in a much smaller city, about 90 miles away, which turned out to be equally important.

On March 20, 1854, about fifty concerned citizens gathered inside the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, considered the birthplace of the Republican Party. “These were other people looking to form a new party,” said Russell Blake, professor emeritus of history at nearby Ripon College. “They were a combination of merchants, farmers and lawyers. It’s a town that’s only four or five years old. People had moved here recently. “

Trump waited until the last minute to inform Vance that he would be the vice presidential nominee. Vance won Trump’s call asking him to be his running mate about 20 minutes before Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, according to a source familiar with the matter. .

Vance took a flight to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago hotel in Florida on Saturday morning to meet with Trump.

Vance said on “Face the Nation” in May that the United States “could learn lessons” from some decisions made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, adding questionable policies similar to the treatment of dissidents at universities.

“When it comes to the university principle, the concept that taxpayers have some influence over how their money is spent at those universities, that’s a perfectly moderate thing, and I think he’s made wise decisions there that we in the United States can just be informed,” Vance said.

Vance was pressured at the time because he did not approve of everything Orbán had done. Orbán, who is respected in some radical conservative circles, has taken over state universities, a move critics say has expanded his government’s right-wing influence. He praised this approach, saying his approach could serve simply as a way to get rid of what he sees as left-wing bias in American universities. The May comments came as many U. S. universities were embroiled in protests by pro-Palestinian students.

Trump told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl that Saturday’s assassination had “an impact. “

Karl, according to ABC News, asked the former president if the twist of fate brought about by the bullet had replaced him, and Trump replied, “I don’t like to think about it, but yes, I think it has an impact. “Carl who hopes the bandage covering the ear he scraped can be undone during his speech at the Republican conference on Thursday.

He told other media outlets that this experience led him to rewrite his congressional speech, which he originally called “a very tough speech,” and rejected it.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced in a social media post that he had selected first-term Ohio senator JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate. Ed O’Keefe and Major Garrett have more on how this former Trump critic beat the contenders and what he brings to the nomination.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s five-minute remarks were the epitome of conservative Brandon: a compliment to Trump and a red meat offering at his core.

“Today is a celebration. The American spirit is alive and well,” he said of Trump’s nomination. “Unfortunately, this is also a dark time for our nation. Two days ago, something bad happened to the man we appreciate and love so much. I thank God that his hand was on President Trump,” he said.

In his speech, Greene highlighted trans rights, illegal immigration and aid to Ukraine.

“Donald Trump did it and he will make America great again,” he said. “He will make us rich again. And God is witness that, despite everything, he will give us the country we deserve. ”

Mark Robinson, the lieutenant governor of North Carolina whom Trump once called Martin Luther King Jr. “on steroids,” recalled a non-public history of monetary hardship, expressing a time when he felt “lingering concern about the debate over the expenses that were not going to happen. “to be paid. ”

“Unfortunately, many families today are going through the same experience,” Robinson said, blaming the Biden administration and its policies as the conference marked its first day with a topic on the economy. “But there is hope. “

“The brave center of our time, President Trump, has made our economy roar,” Robinson said. “Under President Trump, there is hope and we want it more than ever. “

Rep. John James, a Black congressman and Michigan veteran, began his speech by telling the story of his parents. His father grew up in Jim Crow-era United States, he said, ferrying beer in a truck between Detroit and Milwaukee.

“He and my mother raised me without even telling me it was a racist country,” James said. “Never, never. “

“Even if they have experienced racism, it does not describe the country they love,” he added.

James flew many hours of combat flying in Operation Iraqi Freedom and led two platoons of Apache helicopters. He referred to his service and Trump’s near-accident on Saturday.

“That’s something else that President Trump and I have in common: The bad guys shot any of us, but they missed,” James said. “And we will continue to fight for United States until the Lord brings us home. ”

James touted policies he hopes a Republican administration under Trump will implement, such as selling school choice so that educational good fortune depends as much on socioeconomic prestige as ZIP code.

“United States is the greatest concept that has ever existed,” James said.

Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama, who refuted President Biden’s Republican State of the Union address earlier this year, painted a picture of a country in economic decline under the Biden administration in brief remarks Monday, saying “Donald Trump is the replacement we need. “”.

“His family will not be able to endure this costly and dangerous descent for another four years,” Britt said. “Four more years of Biden-Harris will impose lifelong financial harm on our young people and our nation. ”

Britt, 42, is the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate. He said Biden’s administration helps keep “making things worse. “And under pressure that the president “is not capable of changing the situation”, in what appears to be a veiled reference to his age and ability to serve, which have been questioned by some members of his own party in recent weeks.

“It’s time to bring President Trump to the White House,” Britt said.

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, a vice presidential candidate, began his speech by referring to Saturday’s assassination attempt.

“Look, if you didn’t do miracles before the Sabbath, now you are greater at them!” Scott said.

Scott said God “saves, liberates, delivers. ”

“Because on Saturday the devil came to Pennsylvania with a gun,” Scott said. “But an American lion got up and roared. ”

Scott said the country was going through tough times lately, pointing to inflation and “poor schools and a culture of victimhood” that were “crushing our poorest kids. ”

“Joe Biden is asleep at the wheel and we are heading towards a cliff,” he said.

But Scott struck a chord of optimism by offering insight into the presidential crusade he led last year.

“We are just the wonderful party of the past, we are the wonderful party of America’s future,” he said. “And there is only one user who can make this vision a reality: Donald J. Trump. ”

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin began by stating bluntly: “Joe has to go,” he said, responding to chants from the crowd.

“Tonight, America, the land of opportunity, no longer looks like that,” he said, pointing to economic problems such as gasoline, real estate and grocery costs and “the silent thief of inflation unleashed by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. “

The governor of Virginia highlighted the current moment with Trump’s economic record, saying that “eight years ago, a foreigner, a businessman, abandoned his career to rebuild a wonderful nation,” pointing to the former president.

“And he will do it again,” he added.

Youngkin, whose election sparked speculation about his longtime vice presidential pick, touted his victory at the governor’s mansion in 2021 after 12 years of Democratic control, saying “Virginians elected a Republican businessman as their 74th governor. ” “.

“And this year Virginia will elect another foreign Republican businessman to be president of the United States,” Youngkin said.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem was once noted to focus more on her state’s record during her tenure than on Trump, which feels more like an argument for her own presidential bid.

He began his speech by saying that Trump “honored the Constitution” by allowing him to do his homework during the COVID-19 pandemic. South Dakota entities have largely remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I don’t think the government has the strength to tell you that your business is essential,” he said.

Instead, in South Dakota, he said, “We put fuel. We embrace freedom. We tell our story and invite others to come and enjoy our beautiful state. All the things that the conservatives have talked about, we have done. “, And it worked. ”

Noem said suicide rates are falling in South Dakota and the state leads the country in decreasing overdose deaths “because other people have hope. ”

“People have small children because they are happy,” he said.

Noem referred to Saturday’s assassination attempt and said the evil “manifested itself in the worst way imaginable through a cowardly act. ”

“Before this week, we already knew that President Donald Trump is a fighter,” Noem said. “He’s the toughest guy I’ve ever met. “

Noem was once thought to be a candidate for Trump’s vice presidential nomination, but she faced a series of negative headlines after writing in her memoir that she shot and killed her dog and alleged that she had traveled to North Korea to meet with dictator Kim Jong Un. there is no record of such vacations.

.

Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, whose appeal was floated early on among potential vice presidential candidates and is considered a rising star in the party, said in his speech that Americans are “struggling” against the Biden administration’s economic policies.

“Every American deserves a chance to achieve the American dream, but because of Joe Biden’s debilitating economic policies. . . that dream has faded,” Donalds said.

Like many other speakers on the first night of the convention, which focused on economic issues, Donald compares the Biden administration’s policies to what Americans experienced under Trump 4 years ago, insisting that the former president would make life less difficult for Americans.

“If ever the time has come for combination in our nation, it’s now,” Donald said.

Republican Senator Katie Britt of Alabama: “During President Trump’s administration, we had the most powerful economy in history. »

Details: Britt stated in his speech to Congress that Trump presides over the most powerful economy in history. The former president also makes this claim, adding during the June presidential debate.

But this is not true when viewed through the prism of many signs commonly used to judge economic performance. For example, GDP expansion was greatest under the Biden administration and infrequently also higher in the 1990s, 1960s, and 1950s (World Bank data). .

Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Dwight Eisenhower also made higher percentage gains in the S

But Trump presided over a very low unemployment rate: the rate of 3. 5% in February 2020, the lowest since 1969, but not the lowest ever observed (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

And under Trump, inflation has remained low and true wage expansion has been the most recent in recent history (federal data analyzed through Texas A&M University).

Four of the five black Republican members of Congress had time to speak on the first night of the RNC. Byron Donalds of Florida, John James of Michigan and Wesley Hunt of Texas spoke, as did Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. Burgess Owens of Utah, the only black member of the Republican convention who did not speak.

Both James and Scott insisted that the United States is a racist country.

“United States is not a racist country,” Scott said, reiterating a word he had spoken on several of his political occasions during his presidential campaign.

James said his parents “raised me without even telling me it’s a racist country. “

“Even if they have endured racism, it does not describe the country they love,” he added.

Donalds, James, Hunt, Scott and Owens will host an event in Milwaukee on Tuesday honoring Black delegates and those called to the convention, according to a flyer received through CBS News. Earlier this year, Scott partnered with lawmakers to co-host a podcast called “America’s Starting Five” on reaching Black GOP voters.

Trump made his appearance at the conference Monday night, shortly after Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee spoke. Wearing a bandage over his ear, it was the first time he had attended an event since Saturday’s assassination attempt, in which he was wounded.

The former president joined his circle of family in the stands, along with his new running mate, and shook Vance’s hand as he joined the group. He waved to supporters in the crowd.

Chants of “we love Trump” echoed through the crowd as the former president appeared visibly moved.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, co-chair of the RNC platform committee, criticized the Biden administration’s economic policies in a speech Monday night. Blackburn warned that if President Biden is re-elected, she will allow the tax cuts put in place under the Trump administration to expire, which she said would result in “the largest tax buildup in American history. ” .

“Our party’s platform is committed to making Trump’s tax cuts permanent,” he said. “You know who will return us to an era of transparency: Donald Trump. “

The Tennessee Republican also touted the Republican platform’s plan to cut spending for businesses, saying Trump would “cut red tape” and “return this country to economic greatness. “

Sean O’Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, delivered Monday’s keynote address as the first chief in the organization’s 121-year history to confront the RNC.

“Today, the Teamsters are here to say we’re not beholden to anyone or any game,” O’Brien said. “We will create a program and work with a bipartisan coalition, capable of achieving something genuine for the country. “Painter. And I don’t care if they criticize me. “

In recent years, the Teamsters have endorsed Democrats for president. But O’Brien said he doesn’t do it out of “gut-stricken” union loyalties. The organization has yet to endorse any presidential candidates.

“The other Americans are not stupid, they know that the formula doesn’t work,” he said. “We all know how Washington is run. Workers have no chance of winning this fight. That’s why I’m here today. Because I refuse to continue doing the same things that my predecessors did. ”

Several months ago, O’Brien said he asked to speak at the RNC and the Democratic National Convention. Trump invited him to speak, he said.

“President Trump had the courage to open the doors to this Republican Convention, and it is unprecedented,” he said. “No candidate in the race would have invited the Teamsters to this arena. “

Ultimately, O’Brien said, the Teamsters care whether a candidate has a “D,” an “R” or an “I” next to their name.

“President Trump is a candidate who is not afraid to listen to new, strong, critical voices, and I think we can all agree, whether other people like it or not, in light of what happened to him on Saturday, he turned out to be a tough motherfucker

A recent CBS News vote found that former President Donald Trump maintains a slight lead over President Biden in each and every battleground state. Anthony Salvanto, executive director of elections and research at CBS News, discusses voting
