Parts of Central America will face Tropical Storm Lisa this week as the typhoon is expected to bring hurricane-like conditions, adding a damaging storm surge and heavy rainfall, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Lisa won her call Monday to the 12th typhoon of this Atlantic hurricane season. With tropical typhoon-force winds, Lisa is expected to continue moving westward across the Caribbean Sea for the next two days, reaching the northern coast of Honduras on Tuesday and the coast of Belize on Wednesday, according to the hurricane center.

On the existing forecast path, Lisa is expected to make landfall in Belize on Wednesday as a strong tropical typhoon or Category 1 hurricane, the NHC said.

Typhoon swell of 3 to 5 feet is forecast along the coast of Belize in spaces of land winds and a swell of 1 to 3 feet is forecast for the Bay Islands of Honduras. Heavy rains can also produce flash flooding from northern Honduras from north to east. of the Yucatan Peninsula, the hurricane center said.

Lisa is also expected to produce up to 8 inches of rain over parts of Belize and islands in Honduras Bay, according to the NHC. Up to 6 inches of rain is expected over parts of northern Honduras, Jamaica, Guatemala and the eastern Yucatan Peninsula. In the Cayman Islands and eastern Nicaragua, up to 2 inches of rain is expected, according to the center.

The typhoon has lately had sustained winds of forty-five miles per hour and is moving westward at 14 miles per hour. It’s about 320 miles southeast of Grand Cayman, the outlet said.

Countries expected to be affected by the typhoon are already preparing. There is now surveillance in place for the Bay Islands and the Belize coast, from north of Puerto Barrios to south of Chetumal, according to the center.

“A hurricane watch means hurricane situations are imaginable in the watch zone,” the NHC said. “An alert is usually issued 48 hours before the first expected appearance of tropical typhoon-force winds, situations that make outdoor arrangements complicated or dangerous. “

A tropical typhoon watch is also in effect for the Bay Islands. A tropical typhoon watch is in effect for Jamaica, the entire northern coast of Honduras, Guatemala from its border with Honduras to Puerto Barrios and Mexico from Chetumal to Punta Herrero.

Lisa’s arrival comes after projections from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in August predicted a 60 percent chance of a better-than-normal season. Storms, meteorologists 6 to 10 will be hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher) and 3 to 5 will be primary hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or higher).

Currently, the season has recorded 12 named storms, five and two primaries (Fiona and Ian). An average Atlantic season has 14 named storms, seven and 3 primaries.

There is still one month left of the Atlantic season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
