Troops may be recruited to put a new coronavirus crackdown into effect, Boris Johnson says

TROOPS can be enlisted for police to put into effect the latest crackdown on the coronavirus, Boris Johnson revealed yesterday.

Soldiers can simply monitor sites like Downing Street, Parliament and nuclear power plants to free officials from dealing with those suspected of violating the new rules.

This came after the prime minister told MPs that fines for breaking the ‘six’ rule or for not wearing a mask would double to two hundred euros for a first offense, while pubs and restaurants that are forgotten of the new curfew of 22:00 closed.

Downing Street said infantrymen can be incorporated as a component of Operation Temperer, which is designed to monitor for terrorist attacks or public unrest.

The army would impose fines or close business, a spokesman insisted.

Instead, the police will ask the army to allow them to devote their resources to the implementation of the new rules. The concept is that infantrymen will take on tasks such as protecting key sites, which also come with Buckingham Palace and army garrisons.

Downing Street said infantrymen can be taken to police to put in place the latest measures against coronaviruses

Operation Temperer allows up to 5,000 of the 3 departments to “increase armed police officers involved in security coverage functions” at those sites.

It came after France took similar measures following the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris and was first used in the UK following the Manchester Arena bombing two years later.

Last night, however, the Council of Chiefs of the National Police, which represents senior officials, warned that the army’s help would be needed.

Its president, Martin Hewitt, said: “The police are an exclusive role and any army will have to be evaluated very carefully. At this time, army involvement is not required and we do not anticipate that it is necessary. “

Johnson has told the House of Commons that corporations that violate regulations can face fines of up to $10,000. “These measures will only be painted if other people meet them,” he said.

“There is nothing more frustrating for the vast majority of those who comply, most of them law-abiding, than seeing a few brazenly challenge regulations, so those regulations will be enforced through more difficult sanctions.

We have already imposed a fine of up to 10,000 euros for those who do not isolate the other, and those fines will now apply to corporations that violate Covid’s rules. It will now double to two hundred euros for a first infringement.

“We will provide the police and local government with the additional investment they need, a greater police presence on our streets, and the ability to use the military where appropriate to free the police. “

The prime minister’s spokesman insisted that infants would not give fines. “[The police] will have the opportunity to rely on the support of the army, he showed mechanisms,” he said.

“This would require the military to perform certain tasks, such as workplace roles and site tracking, so that the police can apply the reaction to the virus.

“It is not a question of granting more powers to the military, nor of replacing the police in execution, and they will not impose fines. It’s about freeing up more cops. “
