Travis Head opted not to rest after the T20 World Cup and will instead sign Steven Smith to compete in the second season of Major League Cricket after signing with Washington Freedom.
Head, who has been playing in the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad lately, was obviously tired at the end of the Australian summer after needing a break in the white ball series at home to the West Indies in February before an additional four months of non-stop cricket that included the New Zealand tour, IPL and the T20 World Cup.
Head opted to continue his in-game odyssey in 2024 by signing with Freedom, just a week after Smith joined the franchise. Australia have no outside commitments after the T20 World Cup until a whiteball tour of England in September.
Head and Smith will play Freedom’s new coach, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who recently replaced Greg Shipperd.
Freedom announced the signing of New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra. They have retained two foreign players for the 2023 season, Marco Jansen and Akeal Hosein.
