Egypt has reopened its remarkable pyramids of Giza to the public after a three-month closure. The reopening marked the reboot of a major tourism industry hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dozens of enthusiastic tourists took selfies as they strolled through Egypt’s most iconic ancient site.
The pyramids were the country’s first tourist charm to reopen, with the Egyptian museum next to Cairo’s Tahrir Square, 0 point of the 2011 revolution.
The Director General of the Giza Plateau, Ashraf Mohi Al-Din, spoke of the reopening: “We are pronouncing the reopening of the archaeological site of Giza to today’s visitors. We beat about one hundred people, of course, following the procedures established through the Ministry of Health.
Farid Cortes, a Colombian tourist, is one of the first to visit: “Today we go to the pyramids because, as they have been closed for so long, we feel that power would be very transparent and we seek to explore the pyramids in this configuration “.
But for consultant Mohamed Farouk, the reopening is a new one after a historic closure: “The closure of the pyramids for 4 months has rarely happened in history, it has almost never happened that the pyramids have been closed and no one has entered.”
“Then this is our chance to be among the first in the pyramids after they are reopened (to the public).”
Egypt made the decision in mid-June to reopen its airspace as well as some of its tourist sites. This is in order to revive tourism, a sector that suffered heavy monetary losses after a three-month closure due to COVID-19 disease.
Authorities expect tourists to have brave flights and head to Egypt after foreign flights resumed on Tuesday due to lower restrictions.
