TotalEnergies and SINOPEC Forge Partnership for Sustainable Aviation Fuel in China

(BRIEF) TotalEnergies and SINOPEC have signed a Head of Agreement (HoA) to jointly identify a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production unit at a SINOPEC refinery in China. This collaboration aims to meet the aviation industry’s need for sustainable responses, with the planned unit expected to produce 230,000 tonnes of SAF per year from local waste or residues. Leveraging SINOPEC’s SRJET generation and TotalEnergies’ ongoing expertise in SAF production, the partnership aligns with SINOPEC’s commitment to green energy responses and TotalEnergies’ transition strategy to reduce carbon emission. footprint of the aerospace sector. With an annual SAF production target of 1. 5 million tonnes through 2030, TotalEnergies and SINOPEC are poised to play a role in the sale of sustainable aviation fuels globally.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, March 26, 2024 — /EuropaWire/ — TotalEnergies and China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (“SINOPEC”) have signed a Head of Agreement (HoA) to expand a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production unit at a SINOPEC refinery in China.

The planned unit, jointly owned by SINOPEC and TotalEnergies, will have a production capacity of 230,000 tonnes per year of SAF and will process waste or residues from the circular economy (edible oils and animal fats).

SINOPEC has developed its own SAF production technology, called SRJET. TotalEnergies, which is already one of the leading SAF manufacturers in Europe, will bring its delight and expertise in the technical, operational and distribution fields.

Yongsheng Ma, Chairman of SINOPEC Group, said: “This historic collaboration with TotalEnergies is part of our strategy to expand low-carbon responses for China and the world. SINOPEC is committed to delivering green and low-carbon energy responses, while maintaining the quality and power of its asset portfolio.

Patrick Pouyanné, President and CEO of TotalEnergies, said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with SINOPEC, a major player in the global refining industry, to produce sustainable aviation fuels and design a SAF production chain in China. Aviation fuels are at the heart of our company’s transition strategy, as we seek to meet the aviation industry’s demand for its carbon footprint. TotalEnergies has set a target of 1. 5 million tonnes of annual SAF production by 2030. “

TotalEnergies and Sustainable Aviation Fuels

TotalEnergies is developing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). These are biofuels produced from waste and residues of the circular economy (animal fats, used cooking oil, etc. ) and “e-jets”, artificial fuels for aviation. These sustainable aviation fuels will particularly reduce CO2 emissions from air transport.
