Top 10 knowledge journalism: migrant deaths, skiing in the Alps, breakdowns in Ukraine, fatal deer

For the Washington Post, Andrew van Dam reviewed knowledge about auto injuries in the United States and found that “the deadliest beast in North America” is the deer. He analyzed more than a million animal-vehicle collisions compiled through a University of Washington study. , whose authors estimated that deer were involved in more than 90% of collisions between 1994 and 2021. Their research also shows the deadliest month and deadliest states for collisions involving deer and other animals that motorists fear.

To uncover the correlation between Russian missile movements in Ukraine and recent blackouts in Kyiv and Lviv, Ukrainian knowledge journalism Texty used reader information, Telegram bots and other open resources to compile the average number of consistent blackouts per day in those two cities. The result shows infographics when certain spaces had constant electrical power or power cuts, mapped from the dates of major Russian movements.

Germany’s “traffic light” government, a coalition of the Social Democratic Party, the Free Democratic Party and the Green Party, needs to reform electoral laws, which would reduce the number of seats in parliament from 736 to 598. Zeit Online bloodhounds translated the proposed reforms into a set of rules to see who would have been elected and who would not in the 2021 general election under the new rules.

The Russian independent media website IStories tested knowledge of a common challenge across Russia: injuries caused by shabby heating, sewer and water systems. At least 29 other people were killed and 80 injured due to the explosion of hot water pipes. The newsroom also revealed an alarming point of deterioration of utility networks across the country.

After the winter heatwave in Europe, however, more snow has begun to fall on Swiss ski resorts, but the snow cover is still incredibly variable, depending on the region and altitude. Thanks to Russia’s war against Ukraine, post-Soviet states are experiencing an increased influx of Russian citizens. Analyzing public knowledge of real estate listings and official government statistics, Armenian media outlet Infocom found that the sudden accumulation of Russian immigrants led to a sharp increase in genuine property costs in Armenia and Kazakhstan.

As part of a cross-border collaboration in 2020, investigative outlet Átlátszó investigated the Hungarian state for expatriate minorities abroad. Using tables, graphs and maps, the team highlighted how 826 million euros ($900 million) had been allocated to communities in Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, etc. The article recently resurfaced on Twitter, after the landlocked nation’s pro-state media used it as ammunition to attack Átlátszó and its editor, Tamás Bodoky, as part of a smear campaign.

In a country that prides itself on keeping its borders open, migrant staff make up a significant portion of Singapore’s population. But the picture is not entirely optimistic. To honor migrants who lost their lives in work-related incidents or due to abuse, an anonymous activist organization, with the help of the knowledge storytelling studio Kontinentalist, collected and mapped reports of deaths of migrant employees in the island country from January 2000 to August. 2022.
