Tokyo showed 256 coronavirus infections on Saturday, topping the 200 mark for the third day in a row, while seeing an increase in the number of severe cases.
The cumulative tally in Tokyo is 19,121, with 350 deaths reported on Friday.
The cases shown on Saturday are most commonly based on 4,817 tests performed on Wednesday.
But what worries the capital lately is the increase in the number of critically ill patients.
On Saturday, the number of COVID-19 patients wanting a ventilator or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) formula was 37, the number has fluctuated from around 20 to 25 no later than Sunday.
As of Friday, the total number of other people hospitalized was 1,565.
The Tokyo government has increased bed capacity for COVID-19 patients to 2,500 from 2,400, adding 150 beds for critically ill patients.
