Idahoans have just a few days left to receive their percentage of the $4. 4 million in unclaimed tax refunds, according to the IRS.
The IRS says about 4,500 Idahoans have yet to file their 2020 federal tax returns and claim the refund they are owed. They also note that the average reimbursement for those with unclaimed budget is $761 per year.
Under federal law, taxpayers have up to 3 years to register and claim their tax refund. For 2020 tax returns, the deadline to do so is May 17. After this date, all unclaimed budget will be added to the U. S. Treasury. U. S.
“There’s money left on the table for thousands of other people who didn’t file taxes for 2020,” IRS Commissioner Danny Welfel said in a news release. “We need taxpayers to claim those refunds, but time is running out for those who may have had or forgotten those refunds. “
To claim an unclaimed refund, Idahoans who have not filed a 2020 tax refund will need to do so first. Although it’s been 4 years since 2020 and collecting the mandatory data might seem daunting, it’s not impossible. The IRS offers a few features below:
Request copies of key documents: Taxpayers who lack the W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 bureaucracy for 2020, 2021 or 2022 can request new copies from their employer or bank.
Use Get Transcript Online: Taxpayers who are unable to obtain the above documents from their bank or employer can request a loose transcript of their wages and source of income in IRS. gov using the Get Transcript Online tool. This can be faster than waiting for news from your bank or employer.
Request a Transcript: If none of the above strategies are available, taxpayers can file a Form 4506-T with the IRS to request a “Payroll and Income Transcript. “This transcript shows data previously obtained from the IRS, such as W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s, as well as data on IRA contributions. Taxpayers can then use this data to record their tax returns.
Boise State Voluntary Tax Assistance Program
The Boise State Department of Accountancy runs a voluntary tax assistance program for anyone who earns $64,000 or less consistently over the year. IRS-certified tax preparers should help you with current, past or amended tax returns for free.
Locations are available in Boise and Meridian by appointment, or volunteers can help you virtually.
Many other people who didn’t file their 2020 taxes returning or claiming their refund would have possibly forgotten to do so due to the chaos surrounding COVID-19.
“People have faced incredibly uncommon conditions during the pandemic, which would have arguably caused other people to request a conceivable refund on their 2020 tax return,” Werfel said in a press release.
“It’s possible for people to have just those elements, adding students, part-time staff, and others,” Werfel continued. “Some other people probably won’t realize that they may be owed a refund. We inspire others to go through their files and start collecting files now so they don’t run the risk of missing the May deadline.
