Three years since the first COVID case reported in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) – According to the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS), since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 70,000 cases of COVID have been reported in Yuma.

And, tragically, more than 1,000 people have died from the virus.

On March 20, 2020, the first case of COVID was reported in Yuma County.

Less than a month later, the Yuma Department of Public Health reported the county’s first death.

“We knew it was going to happen because it was very contagious at the time. But we had no idea how vital it would be,” said Dr. Robert Trenschel, executive director of Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC).

“We have several tactics to get oxygen to patients before they want extensive care, the last thing we want to do is put on a ventilator,” Amanda Sherpensteen told KYMA, as we were given a glimpse of YRMC’s COVID unit on Dec. 22. 2021.

Following Omicron’s rise, YRMC was able to officially shut down its COVID unit.

With just over a hundred cases reported last week, many have resumed normal life.

County Supervisor Lynne Pancrazi said the county is back on track, thanks to everyone who sacrificed for the pandemic.

“Yuma County, as always, has done a task together, and it’s because of the cooperation we’ve had with each other,” Pancrazi said.
