India has added 3 more Ramsar sites to its network to bring the total to 85 Ramsar sites in the country, covering an area of 1,358,068 hectares in India.
Out of 3 newArray, two are in Tamil Nadu and one is in Madhya Pradesh. Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary of Tamil Nadu, Tawa Reservoir of Madhya Pradesh are declared new Ramsar of India.
Ramsar sites: foreign conference on wetlands signed in February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, under the auspices of UNESCO. India became a contracting party to the Ramsar Convention in 1982 and has so far declared 85 wetlands as Ramsar sites covering all states and territories of the Union.
Wetlands serve to maintain global biological diversity and human well-being. It acts as a buffer against floods and droughts, cyclones and other extreme events and plays a vital role in maintaining water and food security. It also supports the conservation of species of local, national and foreign importance.
Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has enunciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to expand wetland conservation spaces in India.
“This achievement reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s initiative to build harmony with nature, call our wetlands Amrit Dharohars and work tirelessly for their conservation,” Yadav posted on the social network X.
The government last year announced the Amrit Dharohar initiative to achieve targets by selling the unique conservation values of Ramsar sites.
