Three dead in southern Pakistan as fire engulfs advertising building

A massive fire broke out Wednesday at a multi-storey advertising building in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest port city, killing at least three other people and damaging several shops, police and rescue teams said.

The fire broke out in a furniture store and temporarily devastated other grounds of the building known as Ayesha Manzil, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said. He said firefighters extinguished the flames after arduous efforts.

Wahab and hospital officials said three other people died in the fire and one user was injured.

TV footage showed billowing into the sky as flames engulfed parts of the building.

The cause of the fire was not revealed without delay and police said they were continuing their investigation.

Most structures in Karachi, and other parts of the country, lack fire prevention and firefighting systems, which often results in damages and casualties.

Karachi is the capital of the southern province of Sindh and such incidents are common.

Wednesday’s fire came less than two weeks after a fire swept through a grocery mall in Karachi, killing 11 more people. In the deadliest incident, another 260 people died after being trapped in a garment factory when a fire broke out in the city. in 2012.
