JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The South African coastal city of Durban closed its northern beach after 3 other people were killed when they were hit by a huge wave, emergency officials said Sunday.
Emergency medical facilities “responded to reports of a wave that swept away an organization of bathers opposing the pier, causing multiple injuries,” EMS spokesman Njabulo Dlungele said. “Sadly, 3 people, in addition to a teenager, were pronounced dead at the scene. “

At least 17 other people were also taken to various medical centers for treatment after being injured by the wave, Nlungele said.
More than 35 rescuers participated in the rescue efforts, concerned about more than a hundred people affected by the big wave, according to the municipality. An investigation into the incident has been opened, the municipality said.
Durban is a hive of activity during the Christmas season, attracting local and foreign tourists to its beaches.
This year’s festive season is expected to attract many travellers eager to return to the beaches after years when lockdowns and COVID-19 precautions have reduced tourism in Durban.
