At least 17 other people were also taken to various medical centers for treatment after being injured by the wave, Nlungele said.

More than 35 rescuers participated in the rescue efforts, concerned about more than a hundred people affected by the big wave, according to the municipality. An investigation into the incident has been opened, the municipality said.
