Thousands stranded in Gaza after border closure with Egypt

The Australians are among more than 400 injured foreign nationals and Palestinians who left the Gaza Strip after three weeks of war between Israel and Hamas.

The move comes after frantic talks overseen by Qatar and the United States, and later agreed to by Egypt, Israel and Hamas.

There are still thousands of people seeking to cross the Rafah crossing and enter Egypt.

It is hoped that within a few hours the Rafah crossing can be reopened to allow more foreign nationals to leave Gaza safely.

More than a fraction of Australians stranded in the war zone had to cross the border overnight.
