Thousands march for the first time in South Africa since COVID-19

More than 3,000 more people took part in South Africa’s first Pride march since the COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday, celebrating the LGBT network and defying a U. S. warning about a possible terrorist attack in the region.

The U. S. government warned this week of an attack imaginable in the Sandton district of Johannesburg, where the march took place.

The South African government expressed concern that the United States has not shared enough data to lend credibility to the alleged threat. Police said all security measures had been taken in the area.

Organizers said Saturday that the march would be derailed by any form of threat.

“Today was probably a historic event. We went ahead with the march regardless of protection and all that,” said Kay Ally, president of Johannesburg PRIDE.

Earlier in the week, the organization said the risk made the march more important.
