A popular Chinese medical news site has been censored by the government for “violating applicable legislation and regulations,” months after its complaint about a government-backed Covid-19 herbal remedy sent the shares of a pharmaceutical giant tumbling.
DXY, which counts tech giant Tencent among its investors and manages a multitude of health-related services, questioned in the past the price of Lianhua Qingwen, an herb advertised for fever and sore throat, as a treatment for covid-19.
China approved the concoction, which consists of ingredients such as honeysuckle and apricot seeds, as a remedy for covid-19 in 2020, and it was distributed to the citizens of Shanghai during the city’s outbreak this year.
The DXY article is part of a wave of reports that plunged the shares of the maker of Lianhua Qingwen, one of China’s largest classical medicine corporations, into the stock market.
He has now been banned from posting on at least five of his Weibo social media accounts, with a notice at the top of his official page stating that due to “violation of applicable legislation and regulations, this user is recently prohibited from posting. “
DXY’s official WeChat accounts, which publish several articles a day on medical topics, are not updated as of Monday.
Weibo’s opinion did not specify what regulations had been violated through DXY, which did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.
The Chinese government has increasingly promoted classical medicine at home and abroad in recent years, with nationalist overtones.
DXY’s policy prompted complaints that it was targeting Classical Chinese (MTC) to advertise Western pharmaceuticals.
The United States and other countries have warned that there is no evidence that Lianhua Qingwen is running to save you or cure Covid-19, even though it is being promoted through the government of China and Hong Kong.
The U. S. Food and Drug Administrationsaid it had approved Lianhua Qingwen and that claims about her related to the coronavirus were “supported by competent and reliable clinical evidence”.
Beijing published its first white paper on TCM in 2016, outlining plans to build medical centers and send practitioners to emerging countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.
President Xi Jinping described TCM as a “treasure trove of Chinese civilization” and said it carries as much weight as other treatments.
Beijing’s National Health Commission also sent TCM practitioners as part of its medical reinforcement sent to combat Covid-19 outbreaks across the country.
