There will be enough Covid-19 vaccines in the world for life to return to the overall pre-Covid at least until 2022.
This prediction was made by Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO), on 15 September at a virtual assembly organized through the United Nations Foundation.
“The way other people believe is that in January you have vaccines for the global total and things are going to start to get back to the general, that’s not how it works,” Swaminathan told the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
60-70% of the population wants to be vaccinated for relief in transmission.
Swaminathan said between 60 and 70% of the population wants to be vaccinated before they begin to see a “drastic reduction” in virus transmission, CNN reported.
The chief scientist also said WHO’s Covax initiative, which gathers resources among governments, philanthropists, scientists, fitness organizations and others to drive the development, manufacture and equitable distribution of vaccines, will only be to discharge billions of vaccines. until mid-2021, scMP reported.
This number of doses is too low for the maximum population to develop immunity, as doses should be distributed among 170 countries or economies that have joined Covax.
According to its website, Covax aims to distribute 2 billion doses by the end of 2021.
The measures will have to be maintained
In the meantime, before enough people get the vaccine to increase immunity, we’ll want to keep protective measures like distance, dress in a mask and respiratory hygiene, such as covering their mouths while coughing, washing their hands often, Swaminathan said. CNN.
He added that WHO’s assessment for vaccine deployment is in mid-2021, as the effects of vaccine testing will begin to come early this year.
There’s also the question of how long vaccines can protect, he said, adding that booster shots are a possibility, CNN reported.
“I think it’s to say it could be 2022 when we start thinking about getting back to general life before Covid,” Swaminathan said.
