I am a big fan of 今 漢 (kotoshi no kanji, kanji of the year), which is announced every December at Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. Last year’s kanji were 令 (rei, order; splendid) a nod to the new 令 時代 (Reiwa Jidai, Age of Reiwa).
It is in the mid-2020s and I do not know what kanji will be decided to constitute this year, I would be willing to bet that the word of the year will be ‘korona’, short for ‘型’ (shingata koronauirusu , new coronavirus). Kanji may be 病 (yamai; bya, disease) or 禍 (wazawai; ka, calamity), which has adhered to the ‘禍’ 禍 (korona-ka, coronavirus crisis).
Another candidate is ‘shin, again’, which is seen in ‘型 (shingata, new strain) and’ ‘常 aratana nichij’, new normal. The Shogakukan publishing corporation is also focusing on Array, but in his case, it is for 語 (shingo, new words) as a component of his per-month ‘辞 泉’ 選 ぶ ‘語’ 賞 (Daijisen ga erabu shingo taish, the costs of the new words decided through Daijisen), Daijisen is a dictionary for general use published through Shogakukan.
They are selected about five to ten months per month and those are words that are understood through the population but are not yet identified through the dictionary. It will not be unexpected that in May, many of them have to do with 後 後 (gote gote, too little late), ”Tyky ‘ar-too, Tokyo Alert),’ セ ”ワ’ essential worker’), ”””’feisu sh’rudo, face screen) Surprise Array, 狼 (jinr, werewolf).
The first 語 of this list, 後 後, is increasingly used to refer to the slowness of government responses to 禍. According to a survey by Yomiuri Shimbun, more than 80% of respondents said a state of emergency deserves to have been declared earlier. The 後 後 対 策 (gote gote no korona taisaku, measures contrary to coronaviruses arriving too late) stimulated the creation of ‘June 2’ which came into force on 2 June approximately a week after the 緊急 態 (kinkyo jitai, state of emergency) was lifted. ワ セ They are the ones who can’t paint from the house and have to keep running and, because it’s difficult to locate face masks, that staff will have to wear plastic viewfinders.
So how do 狼 have compatibility in all this? This is possibly because of the emergence of the ‘飲’ (onrain nomikai), in which participants played a game called Werewolf who sees a team of ‘shimin, citizens’ who seek to deduce who is among the ‘狼 them’ it is. It’s not the first time the game’s made headlines, however, with more time lost, it turns out we’re getting old to, well, pass the time.
With all this drink, however, I expect a little 太 (korona-yetori, weight gain due to coronavirus) or 粛 太 (jishuku-yetori, weight gain due to staying at home) as an entry, although maybe it’s just me ?
The list of 語 for June saw a little more variety. 禍 despite everything on the list and, according to the pandemic theme, did the same (uizu korona, with crown), 転 売 – (tenbaiy, a user who buys and resells pieces to order, such as face masks), 夜 街 (yoru no machi, night city) and 昼 karaoke at noon).
While hopes for a vaccine seem remote, others will have to settle for the concept that 時代 を are living in an era of coronavirus.
For now, that means identifying clusters that have recently popped up at 昼カラ gatherings and small establishments in the 夜の街 — dive bars and host clubs, for example.
However, the Daijisen list is not just words. The dictionary has taken on the greatest use of ァ (antifa, antifa), which is short for an English-language anti-fascist, and ‘sukiru’, which is the ability to forget things like social media and Internet trolls. It’s the same, in the term 既 読 – (south kidoku, forget a text after seeing it).
