LONDON, 20 September (Reuters) – The UK is at a critical juncture of the COVID-19 pandemic and faces a very complicated winter, one of the government’s most sensible medical advisers warned at a public briefing on Monday.
The cases in Britain are in what Prime Minister Boris Johnson has described as the time of the wave of the virus, with giant portions of the country’s theme to restrictions on social freedom and London is expected to be next on the list.
“The trend in the UK is going in that direction and we are at a critical juncture of the pandemic,” UK Medical Director Chris Whitty said in a speech scheduled for 10:00 GMT on Monday.
“We have the knowledge to see how to manage the spread of the virus before a very difficult winter period. “
More than 40,000 people in Britain have died within 28 days of positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March, the highest figure in Europe.
New instances declined due to an unprecedented three-month national blockade, but larger with the closure of the economy, schools and offices. The government has been harshly criticized for its lack of test capability.
Whitty’s caution is expected to announce a national speech through Johnson later this week, which has not been demonstrated through ministers.
Health Minister Matt Hancock warned Sunday that the country is at a turning point and said other people will have to comply with self-disilence regulations or face new lockout measures. The government announced heavy fines for non-compliance.
Hancock refused to rule out some other national blockade, which Johnson said would have disastrous consequences for the economy, and said officials were convinced how productive it was to deal with the increase in cases in London. (Report via William James edited through Gareth Jones. )
