In February, the United States announced plans to bolster its military presence in the Philippines, amid emerging tensions between China and the island of Taiwan.

The Philippines is the oldest U. S. treaty best friend in Asia and is home to two of the largest U. S. Navy and Air Force bases. U. S. Outside the continental U. S. The bases were closed in the early 1990s.
The Philippine Constitution prohibits the permanent base of foreign troops, but the EDCA defense pact allows visiting U. S. forces to remain in rotating teams in designated Philippine camps indefinitely. The agreement provides allocations for the defense apparatus, but allows for nuclear weapons.
