The U. S. and China are expected to finish 1-2 for the gold medal and overall medal table at the Paris Olympics, which open in 100 days.
The U. S. is expected to win 123 medals in total, 39 gold. China is expected to win 35 gold medals and 89 medals in total. The pair also finished 1-2 in either category 3 years ago at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics.
This prediction is made through Nielsen’s Gracenote Sports, which provides statistical research for sports leagues around the world. It also tracks primary competitions involving Olympic sports leading up to the Games.

It would be the eighth time in a row that the U. S. has won the most medals at a Summer Games.
