The U. S. Air Force U. S. Discovers Former Camp at New Mexico Base: ‘It Marks a Pivotal Moment’

The USAF explained that members of the Environmental Flight and geomorphologists from the 49th Civil Engineering Squadron (other people who examine the evolution of the Earth’s surface) discovered the site in March. The location was called Gomolak Overlook and was discovered near the barriers of the army base.

In a statement, Matthew Cuba, head of cultural resources for the 49th CES, said the sands of nearby White Sands National Park have buried them for the past few thousand years.

“The formation of white sand dunes inadvertently buried the site, with windblown silt protecting the archaeological remains,” Cuba said.

“This marks a pivotal moment in bringing to light the history of the region and its first inhabitants. “

The camp contained the remains of a chimney, which even contained charcoal stains, which is a testament to the early settlers’ reliance on the chimney.

“About 70 objects were discovered at the site, ranging from chipped stones to a rare example of ancient stone, offering valuable clues about human activities beyond,” Cuba said.

“We also discovered a number of campfires, or camp networks, with remains of mesquite charcoal, which is a wonderful discovery in itself. “

The artifacts discovered by the researchers will be studied and preserved, for example.

“By adhering to the National Historic Preservation Act, we will ensure that all mandatory steps are taken to maintain the integrity of the monument while also facilitating the advancement of the runway project,” said Scott Dorton, environmental officer for the 49th CES.

“The Department of Defense’s control of giant tracts of land, adding the spaces between White Sands National Park and Holloman, inadvertently protects many documented and undocumented archaeological resources,” he added. “As a result, some of the best-preserved archaeological records in the Tularosa Basin live on Department of Defense lands. “

The USAF says the discovery “offers insight into early human and environmental changes. “

“As stewards of those resources, we will have to ensure their preservation and documentation for future generations and make sure that cultural resources allow for progress and development at the same time,” Cuba said.
