Italian citizen shot dead in the capital’s Gulshan diplomatic domain in 2015
The trial for the murder of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella is still over.
Five years have passed and the trial is still complete in the case brought for the murder of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella.
The 50-year-old humanitarian employee was shot dead in Gulshan’s diplomatic domain in Daca on the night of September 28, 2015.
The case is still being tried before the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Court, as he has yet to hear the testimony of the prosecution witnesses.
The Italian was the allocation manager for Profitable Opportunities for Food Security, an ICCO Cooperation programme, an NGO founded in the Netherlands. Forensic experts said he was shot three at point-blank range.
The carnage came just two days after the Australian cricket team made the decision to halt its excursion to Bangladesh after its government warned of possible attacks by militants against “Australian interests”.
Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States also said they had won reports that activists were targeting their interests in Bangladesh and pleaded with their citizens to restrict their movements in bangladesh.
In June 2016, police filed the indictment in court and appointed seven people, former BNP neighborhood commissioner MA Qaium and his brother MA Matin.
The five are Tamjid Ahmed alias Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, Minhajul Arefin aka Bhaigna Russel, Sakhawat Hossain and Bhangari Sohel.
The trial began in October of the same year after a Dhaka court prosecuted them, but nearly 4 years later, the court has not yet finished hearing the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses.
Judicial officials stated that 39 of the 71 witnesses have testified in court, and that the last hearing took place on 22 September.
“The trial must end earlier this year, but the Covid-19 pandemic is delayed,” additional attorney general Taposh Kumar Pal al Dhaka Tribune said.
According to the formal indictment, Qaiyum, who organized the BNP’s Dhaka subway unit, had planned the assassination as part of a plot to create anarchy in the country, pressure the government and send a message to foreigners that they were unsafe in Bangladesh. .
Investigators say Qayum’s brother, Morning, arranged everything, hiring three hitmen to kill a “white man” (foreigner) and Tavella to his prey. Sohel provided the firearms while Sharif provided the motorcycle used in the murder.
Among the defendants, Qaium and Sohel are tried as fugitives while Matin is released on bail and the others are in prison.
After the assassination, the Middle East-based Islamic State claimed the duty of the attack on the U. S. -based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activity around the world.
However, the accusations were rejected through the Government of Bangladesh.
