The cumulative total of COVID-19 infections in Japan exceeded 50,000 on Monday, adding about 700 of the Diamond Princess cruise that was quarantined in Yokohama in February.

The national total reached 40,000 on August 3 and it took seven days to load another 10,000.

On Monday, at least 510 other people tested positive for the virus across the country.

Among Japan’s 47 prefectures, Tokyo showed on Monday 197 new infections, the first drop of less than 200s since July 27, when 131 cases were reported, the metropolitan government said.

Daily figures have been the best in Tokyo since the end of July and reached a record 472 on August 1. On Sunday, the instances amounted to 331.

Monday’s 197 instances were shown after 3,243 tests were conducted on Friday, the metropolitan government said. This raises the total number of infections in the city to 16,064.

Of Monday’s total, another 65 people were in their twenties and forty-five in their thirties, in combination representing 56%, according to the metropolitan government.
