(Reuters) – Spanish hotels expect demand to rise this spring, driven by a surge in foreign visitors and an appetite to travel during the Easter holidays, national hotel and tourist accommodation agreement CEHAT said on Tuesday.

As consumers continue to prioritize in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic – with European airlines reporting strong summer bookings – the outlook for the tourism industry is clouded by high jet fuel prices, global hot spots, disruption at aircraft brands and wage disputes.

But in a joint report with consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), CEHAT said it expects the sector’s expansion this spring to be 14% higher than last year and 25% higher than pre-pandemic levels.

José Manuel Fernández, from PwC, pointed out that an increase in hotel spending is expected due to a more solid economic environment and a strong expansion of foreign tourism, mainly from neighboring countries.

“France and Italy stand out for their targeting of Spain and there is an intelligent recovery in air connectivity with England and Germany, which is already above pre-pandemic levels,” Fernández added.

However, CEHAT also warned that Spain’s weaker expansion forecasts for 2024 and persistently high inflation have weighed on the sector’s costs.

Spanish airports owned by the operator Aena closed the month of February with a record number of passengers, 19. 2 million, maintaining the upward trend observed in January and 2023.
