The remains of 72 Saudi OFWs who died from COVID-19, motives come to their homes

MANILA, Philippines – The remains of 72 Filipino officials (OFWs) from Saudi Arabia who died of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and other reasons came home on Friday.

Of the repatriated remains, DOLE said they were from Al Khobar, 17 from Jeddah and 15 from Riyadh.

Upon arrival at Terminal 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City, remains classified as COVID-19 were transported at the close of crematoriums while the others were transported to their respective provinces at the expense of the government.

“We don’t do this just because it’s our duty. This is how the government respects and recognizes the valuable contribution of our fashionable heroes to the expansion of Filipino families and the country,” said DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

This most recent repatriation raises the total number of deceased DWO repatriated from Saudi Arabia to 267.

The most recent figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs show that more than 10,000 Filipinos have contracted COVID-19.

Of this number, 6,080 have recovered, while 3,219 are still in treatment.

There are 742 reported deaths.
