Jan. 19: Yuba City’s Refuge Dining and Living Room celebrated its grand opening on Thursday, a feat nearly four years in the making.

Owners Balwinder and Sukhwinder Singh Tamber bought the place in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 shutdown affected many businesses in the region and state. Since then, they’ve mostly used it as a rental space for special occasions, but their public restaurant and bar are now fully open.

“The Refuge has been open and closed so many different times over the years, as many in Yuba City know, so we’re really trying to make sure that everybody knows it’s open again daily,” said Jay Pegany, the restaurant’s manager.

In less than a decade, the Tambers have built a small culinary empire in Sutter County. They acquired Little India around 2017 and then Big John’s Bar.

Now that the Refuge is operational, the Tamber brothers and their families hope to continue feeding the network while also offering an exclusive and convenient location for special occasions.

Karm Bains, Sutter County Supervisor, is passionate about Tamber’s history, knowing that they had come to the U. S. from India in search of greater opportunities. After spending time in Los Angeles, the Tambers returned to Sutter County and began helping other Indian restaurants. some of whom returned the favor at Thursday’s banquet.

“The network is very strong here,” Bains said. “And mutual demonstrations like this are very important. “

Thursday’s grand opening party was full of delicious Indian food, music, and fellowship. County supervisors and city council members from both sides of the bridge were in attendance alongside plenty of business representatives, community leaders, and members of the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce.

“This is our first ribbon cutting of the year, and probably the second biggest that we’ve had since last year,” said Celeste Brown, the Chamber’s business engagement coordinator.

“It’s big, bigger than I expected,” added Natalie Syverson, a member of the Chamber and owner of Natalie Syverson Photography. “It’s great to see so many other members of the network here. “

As the evening progressed, the Shelter’s owners, staff, and their families earned awards and honors from the City of Yuba City and Sutter County.

The shelter is located at 1501 Butte House Rd. in Yuba City and is open daily on Tuesdays. Their menu includes classic Indian dishes, American-style options, craft cocktails, and desserts.
