In 2018, Walmart introduced its Big Blue cellular pharmacy in spaces affected by bugs or fires and set up, filled prescriptions and met with consumers in affected communities. Since 2018, Big Blue has been used nine times.
The cell unit is a fully functional pharmacy that takes about 30 minutes to install once on site. The sides of the trailer are getting bigger and bigger and there is enough area for two pharmacists and some technicians to work. It also has a waiting room, a bedroom and toilets.
David Barnard joined Walmart as a pharmacist in Deland, Florida, about five years ago. He first volunteered to work with Big Blue Hurricane Florence in September 2018. In 2020, he accepted a special assignment with Walmart Realty to help provide feedback on how to improve the pharmacy. Processes and systems. He is also one of 4 pharmacists who take Big Blue down the road when the store’s pharmacy is down.
Walmart operates 4600 pharmacies in its U. S. stores, and 4000 of them are in medically underserved areas, according to Dr. Brown. Soujanya Pulluru, vice president of clinical operations and virtual fitness services at Walmart.
Barnard participated in 3 of Big Blue’s nine missions. Il says the cellular pharmacy is set up as the store it replaces. From a photo of the store’s pharmacy, Bernard can order accurate medications from the on-site distributor. He said Big Blue celebrated about $300,000 in inventory. Barnard said the cell unit retails the drugs that the pharmacy it replaces dispenses most often. The cellular pharmacy can fill 300 prescriptions per day.
Big Blue has a refrigerated box for insulin and other bloodless medications. Barnard said there’s an organization at Walmart that strives to get Big Blue up and running when needed. He said compliance ensures he is allowed to work in any state that requires the service. Blue responds to the crisis through Walmart driver Wyatt Jepsen, who drove with Barnard after Hurricane Ida in August 2021.
Walmart said Barnard in Galliano, Louisiana, opened the pharmacy for 12 days after Ida. Barnard said he distributed emergency medication and the team administered COVID, flu and tetanus vaccines and provided blood pressure medication and insulin to diabetics.
“Big Blue stayed open until everyone served every day,” Barnard said. “We also catered to the wishes of network members who were not Walmart consumers at the time. There was a man in Galliano who needed insulin for his young son. , and thanks to the emergency protocol, I was able to get him something. He is now a Walmart customer.
Since the computers used at Big Blue are connected to store records, the recorded scripts can be noticed seamlessly through consumers. But for non-Walmart consumers, the emergency protocol allows a pharmacist to fill medications when consumers may turn out to have a prescription for the drug. Barnard explained.
Walmart said the success of its more than 4,600 pharmacists continues to expand, especially in medically underserved rural areas. Although legislation varies from state to state, pharmacists can test and provide remedies for situations such as strep throat and influenza.
Barnard said Big Blue is a lifeline for communities affected by disasters, leaving many others without power and that their medicines may be scattered and unusable. lift.
Barnard has returned as pharmacy manager for Store No. 2944 in Deland, but said he is fit to leave the next time Big Blue is needed.
Pulluru, who recently spoke at a fitness innovation occasion in Bentonville, said Walmart is expanding its fitness initiative to include more clinics, virtual fitness, clinical trials, and holistic and fitness care for other underserved people across the United States.
Since 2019 and the launch of Walmart Health clinics, the retail giant has opened 41 clinics providing number one and urgent care, labs, x-rays and diagnostics, behavioral health, dental optometry and hearing services. Pulluru said Walmart plans to nearly double the number of clinics it operates through the end of 2024.
Walmart also provides virtual physical care in its clinics. In May 2022, Walmart acquired telefitness provider MeMD and renamed the service Walmart Virtual Health Care, which offers telefitness for medical and behavioral care.
Walmart Health also provides discounted virtual emergency care for UnitedHealthcare patients. These facilities have remedies for colds, flu and other minor illnesses. The cost of this virtual appointment is $49 or less, Walmart said.
Pulluru oversees Walmart’s virtual care services. He said the pandemic has highlighted the full perspective of virtual care and expanded the scope of care delivered through pharmacists and other professionals, given the growing shortage of doctors. He said 40,000 doctors abandoned their practices in 2020 and many camps are still struggling to get enough doctors to offer number one care.
“We see physical care being provided through a team that includes our pharmacists who have mobilized the pandemic to administer COVID tests and a host of vaccines and immunizations. Medical care does not deserve to be provided by only one doctor,” Pulluru said.
As a former medical practitioner for 15 years in the Chicago area, Pulluru said she came to Walmart because of Walmart’s success in rural America for access and affordability of physical care. His love for treating the underserved is rooted in his formative years traveling to India with his father, a doctor.
“He went to rural villages where a lot of people were queuing to see him,” Pulluru recalls. “He examined them for the disease and vaccinated them; He treated them for illnesses without pay. They lined up all day for treatment. ” You may only see the vulnerability and desperation of physical care in your eyes. I was fortunate enough to immigrate to the United States at the age of 8 and sought to become a doctor to help other underserved people. With Walmart, I believe we can make a difference in communities with a transparent, affordable model of primary, pressing and chronic care.
