MADRID – The source of rooms in shared flats increased by 81% in Spain between March and October 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic expelled Generation Y and Generation Z from their shared urban accommodation, the Idealist real estate portal said Wednesday.
The offer of shared flats soared 159% in Madrid and 83% in Catalonia from October to March, while academics and young professionals, under pressure from loss of tasks or the move to activity, moved to update them.
Traditional student cities such as Seville, in the southern region of Andalusia, have also emptied, with the source increasing by 105. 9% during the period, an amplified trend through the disappearance of foreign academics amid COVID restrictions.
