Although Brazil’s Independence Day is officially celebrated on September 7 to commemorate Brazil’s declaration of independence from Portugal in 1822, this loose birthday party will take place in Gloucester earlier in a new program to celebrate Brazilians living here and share their culture with the community.

Cape Ann Museum and Action Inc. are working with local Brazilian citizens to share Brazilian cuisine, culture, music and dance at the event at the museum at 27 Pleasant St. in the centre of Gloucester.

Participants can go outdiinhos, a filling of cheese, vegetables or meat, wrapped in a cooked or fried dough, or watch capoeira, which combines elements of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality, among many other activities.

“We are surrounded by Brazilian culture here in Cape Ann and we are very happy to see this reflected in the museum,” said museum director Oliver Barker. “The museum exists to tell the unique story of this position and the multiple communities that inhabit Cape Ann, and we hope everyone will sign up for this fun afternoon of activities and celebrations with many of our network partners. “

The Brazilian network has evolved in Cape Ann, basically in the center of the city, for more than 35 years. According to figures from Action Inc. , more than 4,000 Brazilians live in Cape Ann, many of whom have businesses that add local restaurants, hair salons, department stores and cleaning companies.

The afternoon program includes live music through Vidinha de Balada in the museum courtyard, photographs through Sergio Oshira at the museum demonstration, a performance through Capoeira MdP and a jiu jitsu function through DF Fitness at City Hall, food for sale through Oliver’s Harbour Restaurant, and Loose Faces and Balloons in the Sculpture Garden.

There will be tables representing Sawyer Free Library, The Open Door, Gloucester Education Foundation, North Shore Community Health Center, Schooner Adventure, the Gloucester Human Rights Committee and others.

In 2022, Brazil’s Independence Day is among a number of key network celebrations that have been held through the Cape Ann Museum, adding Gloucester’s So Salty; annual COVID-19 commemorative moment; Gloucester Festival of 19 June; the Courtyard concert series; and will conclude with Indigenous Heritage Day on September 24 at the Cape Ann Museum Green campus.
