MANILA, Philippines – On the eve of the announcement of new quarantine levels, the Ministry of Health (DOH) reported 3,446 additional coronavirus infections, bringing the national number of cases to more than 220,000.
The metropolitan domain of Manila reported the number of new cases, 1,900, followed by Laguna (163), Cavite (161), Leyte (155) and Pampanga (116).
This left 59,699 active cases, of which 91. 3% were mild, 6. 2% asymptomatic, 1% severe and 1. 5% critical.
Of the recently reported deaths, 31 died in August, 4 in July and 3 in June. Nineteen of the deaths were in the metropolitan area of Manila, nine in Calabarzon, 4 in central Visayas, two in central Luzon, two in western Visayas and one of Ilocos and Zamboanga.
Undersecretary of Health María Rosario Vergeire reminded the public that they must deal with accredited laboratories if they chose to take their samples at home.
Vergeire stated that according to existing DOH guidelines, laboratories can collect patient samples remotely, provided that the fitness equipment uses protective devices and the DOH is informed of the meeting for proper follow-up.
“Some reports imply that unauthorized laboratories supply at home. We strictly monitor this and warn that sanctions would possibly be imposed if we notice that they are not yet approved laboratories that are offering those remote collections of specimens for COVID-19. allowed for authorized laboratories, ” he said.
Of the 113 accredited laboratories, 43 are located in the Manila metropolitan area.
After reports that the BCG vaccine (Bacille Calmette-Guérin) is being studied for its potential to help others fight COVID-19, Vergeire said there was still inadequate evidence to show that it was actually effective and used among the public.
“We just need to remind the public that lately there are many [medicines] that would be useful in opposing COVID-19. We still have to go through the regulatory procedure to do so, and if we ever intend to enroll in your trials, we will provide information. But for now, there is not enough evidence that BCG can have this smart effect for COVID-19,” Vergeire said.
BCG, which was first used in 1921, is given to newborns to prevent tuberculosis.
A report through the Global Vaccine Alliance, or Gavi, said researchers were considering whether receiving a dose of BCG could save him or help others fight COVID-19 and decrease the number of deaths.
“While this would possibly not prevent others from contracting the disease, there is some evidence that recommends that there is a possibility that this may be useful in reducing the severity of the guilty symptoms of the number of pandemic deaths,” he added. Gavi said.
In an April clinical note, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that while there is no evidence that THE BCG can protect others from infection, “two clinical trials dealing with this factor were underway. “
“In the absence of evidence, the WHO proposed BCG vaccination for the prevention of COVID-19. [WHO continues to promote neonatal BCG vaccination in countries or settings with the highest incidence of tuberculosis,” WHO said.
Vergeire also stated that DOH is looking for suppliers of high-speed nasal cannula (HFNC) machines, which can be administered to hospitals as an option for mechanical fans used in patients with COVID-19 with respiratory problems.
Previously, the Philippine General Hospital had stated that it was better to delay the use of a mechanical fan and, instead, rely on HFNC machines.
Dr. Jonas del Rosario, a PGH spokesman, said early intubation of a patient also increases the risk of fan-acquired pneumonia.
PGH has 22 HFNC machines. With these machines, Del Rosario said, the hospital had prevented at least 70% of its patients from being intubated.
Vergeire said the Office of Civil Protection had purchased more HFNC machines for use in hospitals, however, it specified the number of machines purchased.
