In the post-independence period, tuberculosis (TB) was a major concern, leading to the advent of the BCG vaccine in 1948. A giant trial of BCG (Bacilli Calmette-Guérin) in Chingelput, Tamil Nadu (1968-1987) found that BCG will not offer significant coverage unlike pulmonary tuberculosis in adults. As a result, India has revised its BCG vaccination policy, recommending it within the first year after birth as part of the universal immunization program.
