The mayor of the Polish capital, Warsaw, on Friday had COVID-19. Once again.
Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski said on Twitter that the virus appears to be “even more treacherous and contagious” than before and that its symptoms are far from trivial. Last year he was hospitalized due to a coronavirus infection.
He called on Poles not to forget the risk of an imaginable reinfection. Trzaskowski, an opposition figure, also criticized Poland’s right-wing government for not taking any preemptive measures in recent times to counter the new variants.
The Ministry of Health estimates that the point of immunity in this country of another 38 million people exceeds 90% due to inoculations, more than 54 million bites and the resilience of those who have recovered from the disease. Nationwide action will need to be taken brought in when the number of other people hospitalized for COVID-19 reaches 5,000.
But experts say the new variant is highly contagious and that action must be taken against its spread now. The number of new infections registered around 2,000 on Friday and two other people died, while a week ago there were just over 1,000 new cases and no deaths.
