The Miami Marlins have had to rebuild their roster on the fly after the team’s outbreak of COVID-19 infected 18 players.
According to The Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond, the Marlins have brought in 16 new players through trades, the waiver wire, free agency, the minor leagues, and from the injured list.USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the Marlins have brought in 15 new players. Insider could not determine the exact number.
Each MLB team has an “alternate training site” where players on the 60-man player pool but not on the 30-man roster stay prepared for the season, in case of a COVID-19 outbreak.
On Monday, Marlins manager Don Mattingly said he knew some of the new players slightly.
“Some of the guys I never met,” Mattingly told reporters, Diamond.
The new additions are a mishmash organization. According to Diamond, six of the calls from Jupiter’s Florida school had never played for the Marlins before. Three of them have not yet played in the primary leagues. One of the other named is Eddy Alvarez, a 30-year-old framer who competed in short-court speed skating for the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Alvarez won a silver medal at the Games.
On Monday, Marlins owner Derek Jeter spoke at the media video convention and said adapting to so many new players at once would be an exclusive challenge.
“Not only do you welcome new teammates and go out to expand a bond, but you have to do it socially, you have to do it where you can’t pass out and meet the boys like you normally would,” Jeter said. “That’s a smart question. It’s hard. They spend a lot of time together, but now they spend a lot of time together, and the cases have absolutely changed.”
The Marlins missed seven games due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and MLB temporarily suspended its season. On Monday, Jeter said players with the new coronavirus ranged from asymptomatic symptoms to mild symptoms, but he expects everyone to return this season.
The Philadelphia Phillies have postponed eight games after betting against the Marlins on the weekend of the coronavirus outbreak in Miami. However, the Phillies have tested any positive player.
The St. Louis Cardinals are the last team to revel in an epidemic, with a total of thirteen team members, six players, seven members, tested positive. They were also put off for seven games.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said he would cancel or postpone the season if a team lost so many players and games that it would put him at a competitive disadvantage.
The Marlins have had positive cases in the last three days and will play on Tuesday.
