THERE IS a city in Europe that for several years has been compared to Venice and yet it is much less difficult for your bank account.
Travel experts have dubbed Aveiro the “Venice of Portugal” thanks to its network of canals and colorful boats.
Located on the central coast of Portugal, Aveiro is known for its canals, boats, new architecture, and fishing industry.
Because of those similarities, the Portuguese port city has been in Venice for many years.
The local newspaper Portugal News wrote: “Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal because, like the Italian city, it also has an estuary that runs through the city centre, where boats called Moliceiros circulate, crossing the river. . the tourist visit to the estuary.
For its part, Tour Travel and More added: “It is also known as the ‘Venice of Portugal’ because it has 3 canals that divide this town into spaces such as the northern area, the old fishermen’s quarter and the historic buildings to the south. “
Although the canals and boats are quite similar, the costs in bars, restaurants, and hotels are especially better, making a trip to Aveiro much cheaper.
At one hour, Porto is the closest airport to Aveiro.
Ryanair and easyJet offer direct flights from several airports in the UK, Belfast, Leeds, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and London.
Flights charge as little as £26 for a return ticket, and with a flight time of two hours and 30 minutes, tourists will reach the Portuguese city in less time than it takes to reach Athens, Greece and Lanzarote, Spain.
Hotels in Aveiro are also affordable.
Sun Online Travel discovered a night at the Boat Lounge of the Costa do Sal Hotel, a four-star beachfront hotel, for £27. 50 per night, with two other people sharing a room.
There are also even cheaper places, such as a double room with a balcony for £15 for each room.
While hotels that offer services in Venice charge more than double the price.
Food and drink in the city are also reasonable: a pint of beer costs €2 (£1. 74), while a meal at a reasonable restaurant can cost just €8 (£6. 96).
When booking a trip, summer is the ideal time to spend it, as temperatures can reach 29°C.
Although Aveiro may not be as big as Venice, there are plenty of things to do in the port city.
One of the city’s main attractions is a Moliceiro boat along the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon in Portugal.
Boat tours run from sunrise to sunset of the year and costs start from £12 per person.
Other attractions include the Oficina do Doce, a workshop where visitors will have the opportunity to prepare classic Portuguese delicacies such as Ovos Moles.
A workshop costs €4. 30 (£3. 74) for a 30-minute session.
Another charm is the Paiva Walkways (also known as Passadiços do Paiva).
The Paiva Footbridges are an 8 km stretch of footbridges that wind down the hillside along the Paiva River.
Admission to the catwalks costs €12 (£10. 44) depending on the child.
Other attractions of the city are the Museum of Aveiro, in a former convent.
There are several sandy beaches nearby, accessible via public buses.
These beaches come with Barra Beach and São Jacinto Beach.
As a popular holiday destination, Portugal has no shortage of tourist attractions.
Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, is a place among British tourists.
The city is packed with impressive sights, including St. George’s Castle and the National Tile Museum.
Meanwhile, also Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a few kilometers from the city.
Earlier this year, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) released its new list of tourist destinations for 2023.
Among the list is the Portuguese village of Ericeira, considered a paradise for bathers.
Meanwhile, Comporta has been hailed as Portugal’s beach, attracting even the likes of Madonna.
The local language in Aveiro is Portuguese, although English is probably spoken in the city.
Portugal is in the same time zone as the United Kingdom.
The currency is the euro with 10 pounds sterling or about 11. 52 euros.
Lately there are no Covid restrictions and Brits can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days on a visa.
However, you will need to stay in the passport for at least 3 months after the day of your departure.
But Aveiro is not the only town that has been to Venice in recent months and years.
Earlier this year, tourists from a UK city visited Venice thanks to its picturesque canals and waterways and Italian delicatessens.
Cambridge, in the east of England, has been compared to Venice for many years because the two cities share a bridge.
Meanwhile, one European city has been dubbed the original “Spanish Venice”: it’s loved by locals and unknown to most Britons.
A small town in Scotland looks like a beautiful Italian island thanks to its bright buildings.
Here are some other places in the UK that are located overseas.
