The Ineos team withdraws cyclists from the Italian championships while Leonardo Basso tests positive for COVID-19

The Ineos team withdrew their runners from the road race at Sunday’s Italian national championships after Leonardo Basso tested COVID-19.

Basso tried Saturday but showed no symptoms.

Gianni Moscon, Filippo Ganna and Salvatore Puccio trained with Basso before this week and were withdrawn from Sunday’s race out of caution, as well as 4 members. Everyone will have to isolate themselves for two weeks.

In a statement Saturday, the Ineos team explained that Basso had tested negative for COVID-19 on Tuesday but, despite education basically alone and staying at home to the nationals, he returned a positive check on Saturday.

Ganna won the Italian time trial name on Friday afternoon after the morning’s popularity with Basso. They, along with Puccio, were destined for Moscon in Sunday’s road race, but will not be able to run for 14 days.

None of them were in Ineos’ plans for the Tour de France, but not all will compete with Settimana Coppi and Bartali in the first week of September. However, their period of isolation will end in time for them to line up in Tyrrhenian-Adriatic on 7 September.

“The Ineos team today withdrew their runners from the Italian national championship as a precautionary measure in accordance with Covid’s protocols after Leonardo Basso returned positive control today. It’s been and stays asymptomatic,” he said.

“Apart from a stopover at his local medical center 8 days ago for knee treatment, Leonardo is at his home in Asolo with his friend and has been in education for more than 10 days.

On Tuesday, he tested negative. He stayed home and hasn’t joined the hotel team in the last few days. However, he made the time trial with Filippo Ganna and made an educational lap with him, Salvatore Puccio and Gianni Moscon this morning. According to protocols, all four runners will now self-isolate for 14 days.

“Four staff members will also isolate themselves as they are considered as secondary touches. Although they have been in contact with runners dressed in masks, observing social distance and other protocols, the team considers this to be a cautious precaution. helps Leo with any contact with friends and family, if any, in the next period”
