One of Spain’s most exclusive attractions is located in a historic domain that at least no tourist has ever heard of, one expert said.
Las Médulas is a gold mining operation about 24 km from the city of Ponferrada, in the Castilla y León region of northwestern Spain.
Centuries old, the majesty of this landscape is the result of mining used in Roman times.
Timon van Basten, a travel consultant in Spain and founder of Travel Spain 24, told Euronews Travel: “At least no traveller has heard of it, but it’s one of the most exclusive sites I’ve ever found. “
The intensive mining carried out in the Spanish deposits of the Roman era resulted in the extraction of more than 800 tons of gold and had an abundant environmental impact, drastically changing the landscape.

Centuries later, however, Las Médulas is a surprising landscape where history and nature converge and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Describing the site, Van Basten said Las Médulas presents “a surreal landscape made up of towering reddish cliffs and stone pillars found nowhere else in Spain. “
Tourists going on an adventure can explore Las Médulas through one of the countless trails in the area.
To deepen their knowledge of the ancient site, tourists can also visit the Aula Arqueológica Museum, before taking a well-deserved break at one of the nearby farms that offer local wine tastings, as Mr. Sanchez Van Basten says.

Las Médulas can be visited all year round, although they can be enjoyed in spring and summer, when there is less chance of rain than between October and February.
Unlike other parts of Spain where temperatures can be incredibly high, the average maximum temperature in April in Las Médulas is 15°C and the weather is cool with a light breeze.
Still, travelers can enjoy more than thirteen hours of daylight, with the sun rising around 7:44 a. m. and setting a few minutes after nine p. m.
