In 1996, while running for government, a colleague pointed to the new tragedy in which TWA Flight 800 exploded over the waters of Long Island. His “sources” had an explanation of why they knew that Islamist terrorists had shot him down with a missile.
The resulting research is one of the most profound in the history of destiny-twisting reconstruction. Parts of the aircraft were recovered from the ocean floor, rebuilt and examined. Several hypotheses about the cause of the explosion, in addition to terrorism, were eliminated one by one. .

None of this inspired my colleague, who fell into one of the first primary hoaxes on the Internet. It had to be a missile; the investigation into the turn of fate was a farce. It never occurred to me that it involved thousands of other people from various rival federal agencies, local medical examiners, private sector forensic experts, and Navy divers; somehow, they all established their stories directly and coordinated a better cover-up that is still in place a quarter of a century later.
He had similar views on the 1995 bloodbath in Srebrenica, Bosnia. This has never happened, it has been greatly exaggerated, or Bosnian Muslims have done it in one way or another to their own people to galvanize Western intervention. Brutality is not lacking on all sides in this ethno-religious civil war in the Balkans, yet the Srebrenica incident is so disproportionate, so evident and left so much evidence that its existence, and the fact that bosnian Serbs perpetrated it, can hardly be rationally denied.
A quarter of a century later, bodies are still being discovered at or near the site, and the Bosnian Serbs have invented a great martyrdom about the fact that this never happened and that they, the Serbs, are victims of the dark globalist forces.
Fast forward to 2014. By all appearances, Russian or Russian-sponsored forces employing a Buk9 cellular surface-to-air missile shot down Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 flying over eastern Ukraine. The Flight 17 incident was likely the accidental downing of a civilian. passenger plane for a ukrainian army shipment through Russian-sponsored separatist forces; it may have only been resolved with an admission of error and a monetary restitution.
Instead, Russia blocked an investigation, spread a fog of defamatory disinformation and vetoed a UN solution to create a court of inquiry. The angry relatives of those affected do not doubt Russia’s guilt. False flag operation: A Ukrainian plane intentionally shot down the plane to accuse the Russians and galvanize an intervention. Don’t worry that the Dutch reconstruction of the fate’s turn concluded that the damage was part of a Russian surface-to-air missile and that satellite Photograph and eyewitnesses on the ground had detected a battery of Russian missiles moving in the release domain before the incident.
During this total period, I had the idea that this user was an individual user, isolated, with crazy concepts and an awl to grind. But now, in 2022, there are tens of millions; they vote, they change elections, they expand policies, they have an effect on the physical form of all of us through our medical decisions and social behavior; and they are, for the most part, heavily armed.
There has been much debate about the reasons for this disruption. Income inequality?Social networks?The repeal of the doctrine of equity?The American creed of savage individualism?It’s probably all those things and more. There is rarely a single cause for mass social behavior, nor is there an arbitrary deadline in the search for reasons: devout extremism dates back to Plymouth Rock. The robust individualism in the service of unbridled greed dates back to 1607, when that is, sons of the English, the aristocracy rushed through the capes of Virginia in search of gold, real estate and their destiny as future wonderful men.
My former colleague Jim was an exceptionally natural specimen of this American syndrome, as lack of education or cultural deprivation may not be to blame for his condition. But he was just one example of a social epidemic that I call gullible cynicism: the ability to be disdainful, incredulous and paranoid, distrustful, incredibly naïve and accepting maximum fragile fabrication not only to the letter, but with a reverent embrace.
Hence the tragicomic episode of the Covid-19 pandemic, where countless people postulated an airtight conspiracy of microbiologists; public fitness officials at the federal, state, and local levels; fully staffed hospitals; forensics; and all the media, in order to perpetrate a deception. Incredibly, their professional counterparts around the world were achieving the same deception in the best coordination with the United States. sovereign cure for Covid-19 (assuming the virus even existed).
In an equally striking display of gullible cynicism, other people with the same mindset as Covid-19 deniers still refuse to settle for evidence of what happened on national television and in front of thousands of eyewitnesses on January 6, 2021. The crowd that built a gallows and stormed the Capitol consisted of innocent tourists. Or they were antifa seeking to discredit righteous patriots (half of all Republicans). Or they were provocateurs of the FBI. No worry that 315 Capitol rioters have pleaded guilty so far, and that all of their biographies fit the profiles of Trump supporters. This is also certainly part of the conspiracy.
Lately we are going through an unpleasant increase in this syndrome. But it is not unknown in history and in other countries. George Orwell commented on this kind of intellectual state 76 years ago:
“To see what’s under your nose, you want a constant struggle. . . In personal life, most people are quite realistic. When you set your weekly budget, two and two invariably add up to four. Politics, on the other hand, is a type of subatomic or non-Euclidean global where it is quite simple that the component is larger than the total or that two elements are in the same place. Hence the contradictions and absurdities. . . a secret confidence that their political opinions, unlike the weekly budget, will not have to face a falsified reality.
