All cases in the Gaza Strip occurred in people who were in mandatory quarantine centres established through Hamas to return to the country. No cases of network transmission have been reported within Gaza.

But dire economic conditions and a poor conditioning system, partly caused by the blockade, have also made Gaza vulnerable to the virus.

Anyone returning from Egypt will be placed in a committed quarantine center for 3 weeks, said Rami Al-Abadala, head of infection at Gaza’s health ministry.

“Each returne will get one and be examined upon entry,” he said.

A giant contingent of policemen, doctors and nurses stationed in Rafah early Tuesday to welcome returnees.
