The COVID-19 pandemic has affected more than 478,000 OFW, according to DOLE

MANILA, Philippines – Some 478,838 Filipino employees (OFW) are now affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment (DOLE), Silvestre Bello III, revealed Thursday.

Of the number of displaced workers, 230,424 have been repatriated, he added. However, more than 100,000 displaced OFWs have refused to return to the Philippines, he said.

The director of the labor company also revealed that another 13,335 peasant organizations are still in a position to be repatriated, and that 70,647 migrant workers remain stranded in other parts of the world.

Meanwhile, of the 8,880 OFW inflamed with COVID-19, Bello reported that 4,536 had already been recovered, of which 848 had died.

“Marami na nauwi na kakababayan natin na namatay. We have already repatriated to 299 OFW, 80% of whom died as a result of COVID-19,” Bello said.
