Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep dismay at the recent resolution of the Dominican Republic Chambers of Commerce to invite former U. S. President Bill Clinton as a keynote speaker at the Caribbean United Chambers Forum. The move smacks of dishonesty and hypocrisy, especially the Dominican Republic’s questionable plans to speed up the structure of a 250-mile border wall with Haiti.
Bill Clinton, a figure known for his advocacy of global cooperation, human rights, and diplomacy, stands in stark contrast to the moves taken by the government of the Dominican Republic. The resolution to erect a border wall not only sends a message of exclusion and hostility, but also undermines the principles of unity and solidarity that are at the heart of any Caribbean forum.
The invitation to Bill Clinton appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to deflect grievances and assign him a symbol of foreign cooperation, while pursuing policies that exacerbate tensions and perpetuate divisions. It is hypocritical for the Dominican Republic’s Chambers of Commerce to seek the endorsement of a statesman who has advocated for inclusive policies and encouraged dialogue, while also endorsing movements that go against our values.
Moreover, the structure of a border wall between the Dominican Republic and Haiti is not only morally reprehensible, but also short-sighted and counterproductive. Such barriers only deepen existing divisions, exacerbate socio-economic disparities, and impede the free movement of ideas, goods, and people. Instead of structuring walls, we work in combination to build bridges of understanding and cooperation.
I urge the Chambers of Commerce of the Dominican Republic to reconsider their resolution and align their movements with the principles of unity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Inviting Bill Clinton as a keynote speaker while pursuing divisive politics sends a mixed message that undermines the credibility of this forum and diminishes its chances of fostering genuine collaboration and progress in the Caribbean region.
Kind regards
Keith Bernardo
