The choice of “New Kazakhstan” will be a one-man show

Kazakhstan will go to the polls on Sunday for a snap presidential election that almost guarantees President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will return to power, this time for an extended seven-year term.

The 69-year-old faces a box of five political unknowns, with no genuine contenders for the opposition. This is despite promises of radical political reform made after a referendum to replace the charter won a resounding vote in favour in June.
