The Israel Border Police will be separated from the Israel Border Police and remodeled into an independent body, similar to the Israel Prison Service, under the direction of the country’s national security minister, Israeli media reported Thursday.
The plan is a component of the coalition agreement signed between incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud and Otzma Yehudit, led by incoming National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, according to Walla.
So far, Border Police sets in Judea and Samaria have operated under the command of the Israel Defense Forces Central Command, while Border Police sets in Israel have operated under the command of the Israel Police.
Under the terms of the coalition agreement, border police sets will be under the command of the Minister of National Security in either area.
The agreement specifies that the clause must be implemented within 90 days of the formation of the new government.
The IDF reportedly insisted on Ben-Gvir’s request for authority over border police in Judea and Samaria.
