Thales Data Threat Report Reveals Alarming Rise in Ransomware Attacks and Compliance Breaches

(BRIEF) Thales publishes its 2024 Data Threat Report, which highlights a 27% increase in ransomware attacks and a worrying trend of companies failing compliance audits. The report highlights the increasing severity of cybersecurity threats, with appropriate ransomware, malware, and phishing. the most sensible concerns. Human error remains one of the top reasons for data breaches for the second year in a row. In addition, compliance failures are highly correlated with data breaches, underscoring the importance of regulatory compliance in maintaining data security. Despite demanding situations in terms of operational complexity and knowledge classification, organizations recognize the importance of compliance in strengthening cyber defenses. The report also explores the dual effect of emerging technologies, whether threats or opportunities on the cybersecurity landscape.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, March 20, 2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Thales today released the Thales Data Threat Report 2024, its annual report on the latest threats, trends and emerging topics for knowledge security, based on a survey of approximately 3000 IT professionals and security professionals in 18 countries and 37 industries. This year’s report shows that 93% of security threats to IT professionals are increasing in volume or severity, a significant increase from 47% last year.

Threats continue to increase in volume and severity.

The number of businesses that have fallen victim to ransomware attacks has increased by more than 27% over the past year. Despite this evolving threat, less than a fraction of organizations have a formal ransomware plan in place, with 8% resorting to ransom payments.

Malware is the fastest-growing risk in 2024: 41% of businesses witnessed a malware attack in the past year, followed largely by phishing and ransomware. Cloud assets, onboarding SaaS applications, cloud-based storage, and cloud infrastructure management remain the number one targets of those attacks.

The report notes that, for the second year in a row, human error remains the leading cause of knowledge breaches, with 31% of companies citing it as the leading cause.

This information comes from the Thales Data Threat Report 2024, conducted by 451 Research. The report sheds light on how organizations are adapting their data security and practices in reaction to an evolving risk landscape.

Compliance is the key to knowledge security

They found that more than two-fifths (43%) of corporations failed a compliance audit in the last twelve months, and the report highlights a very transparent correlation between compliance and knowledge security.

Of those who failed a compliance audit in the past twelve months, 31% experienced a breach in the same year, compared to just 3% of those who passed compliance audits.

Operational Complexity Continues to Cause Knowledge Issues

Basic understanding of compromised systems, applications, and knowledge continues to lag behind due to the changing regulatory landscape and threats. Only one-third (33%) of organizations should fully classify all of their knowledge, and a concerned 16% say they rank very little or none of their knowledge.

Operational complexity remains an obstacle. Although the number of respondents reporting five or more key control systems has decreased (53% compared to 62% last year), the average number has only decreased (from 5. 6 to 5. 4).

The truth of multiple clouds and evolving global knowledge privacy regulations mean that knowledge sovereignty is a more sensible priority for businesses, with 28% identifying mandatory foreign key control as the number one way to achieve sovereignty. 39% said knowledge residency will no longer be a factor as long as external encryption, key control, and segregation of duties are implemented.

“Companies want to know exactly what they’re looking to protect. As global knowledge privacy regulations are constantly evolving, they want to have visibility into their organization so they have some chance of complying with them,” said Sebastien Cano, senior vice president of cloud licensing and protection at Thales.

“If there’s one takeaway from this year’s study, it’s that compliance is key. In fact, corporations that were well-versed in their compliance processes and passed all of their audits were also less likely to revel in a breach. We’re starting to see more compliance and security purposes come together. This would be a very positive step to strengthen cyber defenses and build buy-in among customers,” he added.

Emerging Technologies Offer Threats and Opportunities

Looking ahead, the report also explores emerging technologies that are most sensitive to fear from IT and security professionals, with 57% identifying synthetic intelligence (AI) as a massive fear. This is largely followed by IoT (55%) and post-quantum cryptography. (45%).

That said, corporations are also looking at the opportunities presented by emerging technologies: more than a fifth (22%) plan to integrate generative AI into their security products in the next 12 months, and a third (22%) plan to integrate generative AI into their security products in the next 12 months, and a third (22%) 33%) Plan to experiment. Integrate technology.
