Dr. Amanda Evans, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center who oversaw the examination of a case at Figueroa, said Alexa was most likely inflamed while in the womb and not during childbirth.
The case, published in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal last month, was one of the first cases recorded in the United States, USA Today reported.
Dr. Mambarambath Jaleel, medical director of parkland Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, said Alexa was born prematurely and needed oxygen, but recovered from the virus without complications.
