He said: “I would propose that they [the UK] reconsider avoiding interconnection.

In a statement, the government said it would be “extremely unlikely” for a “supply emergency” to occur.
They said: “We remain completely confident of our source safety over the winter, as the UK has one of the most reliable and varied power systems in the world.
“In the incredibly unlikely event of an emergency source, National Grid Gas has put in place long-standing emergency procedures for the integrity of the UK fuel grid.
“All countries have such plans and surely there is nothing that recommends that those emergency procedures be now.
“Our priority is to continue working with our EU partners and allies to end the resolve of Russian oil and gas. “
