(Reuters) – The Citi Open in Washington, D.C., which was due to restart the male ATP tour after COVID-19 stopped, was cancelled by 2020, organizers said Tuesday.
The tournament was scheduled to begin on August 14 and would serve as preparation for the U.S. Open, however organizers said considerations of recent restrictions and trends in the coronavirus outbreak had led to the resolution of leaving the event.
“After months of hard work through our team and close collaboration with our many stakeholders, we are heartbroken in announcing that we have to postpone the 52nd Citi Open until the summer of 2021,” tournament president Mark Ein said in a statement.
The Array .. There are too many unresolved external problems, adding various restrictions abroad and worrying trends in fitness and protection, which have forced us to take this resolution now in equity for our players, suppliers and partners, so that they can be confident about their planning. “
The cancellation of the tournament raises doubts about this year’s U.S.Open, which is expected to be played by enthusiasts from August 31 to September 13.
However, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said the arrangements were well on track to host the Western and South Open and the Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows, which are scheduled to take consecutive positions in New York on August 20.
“The USTA will create a controlled environment for players and everyone else involved in any of the tournaments, which will mitigate fitness risks,” the USTA said.
“We base our resolutions regarding the organization of these tournaments on our 3 guiding principles that come with the protection and suitability of all involved, whether the organization of those occasions is in the most productive interests of tennis and whether this resolution is economically feasible.
“We are confident that we are in line with the 3 guiding principles.”
Tennis, in addition to some exhibition events, stopped in mid-March, with Wimbledon cancelled and the French Open moved in September.
The male clay swing is scheduled to begin on September 8 in Kitzbahel, Austria, at the same time as the week of the time of the U.S. Open.
Players will spend more time on clay at the Madrid and Italian Opens before the French Open, which begins on 27 September.
The WTA Tour will resume on the women’s occasion in Palermo, Italy, on 3 August.
The ATP said a new update on the revised 2020 schedule will be released in the next fortnight, adding the final phase of the season to the ATP Finals in November.
